Creating your own website, whether for a WebQuest or any other purpose, has become very easy over the past few years. Although I cannot go into all the different ways to do it or all the features that you might include, you can get the basics very quickly.

There are many different Web editors available now, but the two most popular are Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage. I will concentrate on FrontPage here for two major reasons:

  1. It is available in most or all of the computer labs on campus, as well as at the KSU bookstore for not too much money.
  2. It is easier for beginners to get started in, especially those who already know something about Microsoft Word. Dreamweaver is generally used by more advanced Web developers.

If you do know how to use Word, then FrontPage will be very familiar to you. Here is an interactive exploration of FrontPage 2002 that you can explore to see how it is set up. (FrontPage 2003 is now more common; the interface has changed somewhat, but many of the features remain the same.)

Starting your site

The hardest thing about using FrontPage can be making sure that you get your site started correctly. When you do, then FrontPage can make many things much easier. if you don't do this part well, then it can get frustrating.

Using Templates

San Diego State University has supplied several templates for WebQuests. These have all the navigation, etc. built right in. All you have to do is fill in the text and graphics for your WebQuest.

Making a Page in FrontPage

Making a page in FrontPage is very similar to making a document in Word. If you can use Word, you can use FrontPage for the relatively simple things you will do here.

Enhancing your WebQuest

You may want to do things that enhance the look of your WebQuest website. You may be happy with the template that you have, or you could add a new background, put pictures on your pages, and so on.
