Test Construction
- Instruct students to choose the “best” answer, not
the “correct” one.
- Instruct students to answer all questions, even if
they have to guess at some (but not “correct” for guessing when
scoring).
- Use enough questions to sample the desired
outcomes sufficiently.
- People can usually answer 1-2 multiple choice
questions per minute, so plan your test accordingly.
- Base your test on the desired learning outcomes
for the students within a defined area.
- Use a representative sample of knowledge and
skills.
- Work from a content outline to ensure a
representative sample.
- Use a table of specifications (content areas by
objectives).
- Assemble the items into a test
- Arrange by difficulty (easy to hard).
- Group items about similar topics, with headings.
- Write clear instructions to the students.
