Item Writing Basics
- Items should call for knowledge and skills relevant to instructional
goals.
- Task should be clear and definite.
- Use concrete terms and situations in the questions.
- Each item should test one outcome.
- Remove extraneous material.
- Irrelevant factors should not prevent correct responses.
- Irrelevant cues should not lead to correct answers.
- Items should be independent (one item should not provide clues to
the correct answers of other items).
- Use positive language (remove extraneous negatives).
- Keep reading level appropriate.
- Recheck for relevance to desired learning outcomes.
- Avoid direct quotations from instructional materials.
- Avoid trick questions.
- Refrain from absolutes: Always, All, Never, etc.
