Instructions for Using AOL Instant Messenger

I spend a lot of time with a program called AOL Instant Messenger on my computer. Mostly it just sits there doing nothing, but when someone I know comes online, it informs me and lets me chat with them. Or they can find me and chat with me to ask questions and so forth. The program is free and does not require you to use America Online. However, you do have to download it, install it, and register with the AIM service. If you downloaded a recent version of Netscape Communicator, then you might already have the software.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Go to the Web page for registering and downloading AIM.
  2. Note that you MUST register in order to use it. It won't work unless you choose a screen name, etc. You might have to try several to find one that isn't already taken.
  3. Download the correct version for your computer and operating system.
  4. Install the software. Simply run the program that you downloaded and follow the directions. When in doubt, accept the default settings suggested by the installation program.
  5. When it is installed, you can run the program. It is there on your hard drive and, in Windows, somewhere in the Start menu.
  6. Enter the screen name and password you chose when you registered.
  7. You will now be connected to the AIM server. When you know the screen names of other people, you can enter them into your Buddy List. As a starter, my screen name is Sailfree4021.
  8. When one of your buddies appears online at the same time as you, you can chat with them by double-clicking their screen name.

Happy chatting!
