Chip: @64,64 !It's Chip
Chip: Hi Karie
Lauren Davidson: I was able to leave work early, but it wasn't a fun drive home! I live an hour away from my work, so it took a loooong time!
Chip: My connection was dropped. Did I miss something?
Karie: That makes it a double bummer! We weren't supposed to read anything for tonight's class, were we?
Karie: Hi Chip. Lauren and I were just chatting.
Chip: Nope. Nothing new. A respite!
Karie: where do you get the disney characters?
Chip: To be honest, I don't recall where I got them.
Chip: It's been a long time since I started doing this.
Karie: Not from this Palace website?
Kris: @64,64 !It's Kris
Chip: No, bu there are palaces linked from there where you can get new avatars.
Chip: Hi Kris.
Kris: hello
Chip: Hi rsynk
rsynk: hello
Annette: @64,64 !It's Annette
Annette: Hi
Chip: Hi Annette
rsynk: is it a requirement to post to the wiki?
Karie: @64,64 !It's Karie
rsynk: I was just trying and I couldn't up load my files. I've used pb wiki before, but this one is different
Annette: Chip, A question for you. When doing my objectives, should they align with the IA? I find that I can add so much in the objectives and it might not be in the IA.
Jenn L: @64,64 !It's Jenn L
Chip: No, the wiki isn't a requirement. It might be useful, that's all.
Chip: It should align with the IA.. If it doesn't, you may need to go back and forth to make them align.
Jenn L: Chip, I need to get a hold of Dr. Meghan Harper...I tried looking her up on the faculty list but she is not listed...do you know how I could get in touch with her.?
Karie: I found myself changing my IA in order to make them align sometimes.
Annette: Should my objectives be very very detailed?
Denise: Hello!
Karie: Hi Denise
Chip: With the Wiki..... I'm trying to find a way that you could get the advantages of doing your stuff on a Wiki. And I could get the advantages of submitting the assignments through Moodle.
Chip: Haven't figure it out yet.
Chip: Jenn L. She's over in SLIS. I could probably find her info tomorrow, if you email me a reminder.
Jenn L: okay...thanks
Chip: Yes, the objs are very detailed.
Chip: Hi JennL Hi Denise.
rsynk: you can find her at the www.slis.kent.edu site, too
Karie: I think Dr Harper's email is sharper1@kent.edu, and she answers her emails pretty quickly.
Keith: @64,64 !It's Keith
Keith: Hello
Chip: Hi Keith.
Keith: Hi
Nancy Vondrak: @64,64 !It's Nancy Vondrak
Chip: Hi Jamie
Chip: Hi Nancy
Jamie: Hello!
Chip: Hi Matt
Matt Dockery: Hi
Nancy Vondrak: Hi everyone!
Karie: Hi
Chip: Hi Jenn V
Jenn V.: Hi, everybody!
Chip: Hi Kris R
Kris Robenolt: hi
Adina: @64,64 !It's Adina
Chip: Hi Adina
Adina: Hello!
Jenn L: thanks karie..I'll try it
Chip: We'll get started in just a few minutes.
Tanja: @64,64 !It's Tanja
Tanja: Good evening
Chip: Hi Tanja
Heidi: @64,64 !It's Heidi
Jenn V.: Kris R- Half of my co-workers are at Chaney waiting to see Hillary. Cold Night for politics. Y-town is getting some visits
Chip: Hi Heidi
Heidi: Hello
Kris: ya, i was lucky to be off work tonight with hilary in town
Jennifer J.: @64,64 !It's Jennifer J.
Chip: Hi Jenn J
Keith: So how many are they expecting to see Hillary?
Jenn V.: Four thousand was the last estimate
Keith: hun
Kris: not sure, we had almost 7k for obama
Keith: huh, sorry
Kris Robenolt: I'm staying away from the area
Jenn V.: depends who is counting....
Keith: I would too.
Chip: OK, let's go.
Kris Robenolt: My son lives right across the street
Chip: Any questions about the course?
Matt Dockery: Is the discussion posting grades work the same as our project? Meaning the points you gave us wont go down, only up?
Jamie: Good questions Matt!
Jenn V.: thanks Matt
Chip: Right, Matt, up to 50 discussion points. This is just the first installment.
Matt Dockery: Ok, sounds good
Nancy Vondrak: you said 30 is the target by spring break?
Andy: @64,64 !It's Andy
Adina: Discussions include here and the forums, right?
Chip: I would recommend that: easier to get the full amount by May
Chip: Hi Andy.
Kris: so is it this week we submit all of our revisions?
Karie: so 50 is the full amount you'll give by May?
Andy: Wow what a day!!!!
Annette: March 11th is the deadline.
Chip: March 11 is the final date for submitting the Analysis Phase. Plenty of time for revisions.
Chip: 50 is the max for discussion points.
Jamie: So on March 11 we need to submit all 4 revisions correct?
Kris: ok thanks
Nancy Vondrak: so since we don't have a written assignment this week, it might be a good time to majorly work on those revisions
Chip: By then, yes Jamie. I'll be posting instructions for how to submit it soon.
Shehu Umar: @64,64 !It's Shehu Umar
Jamie: Great. Thanks!
Andy: do we submit all in one file or seperate?
Chip: Yes, Nancy, I was just about to make that point, too.
Chip: Andy, I'll let you know with instructions in Moodle.
Andy: thanks
Andy: Chip, you like I feel after the past two weeks
Chip: So, you've been going full out for several weeks with reading and assignments. This is a bit of a respite.
Nancy Vondrak: thank you!
Karie: Thank goodness!
Jamie: Very much needed!
Keith: thanks
Chip: And a few of you need to catch up!!!
Shehu Umar: Yes
Chip: Although most of you are doing quite well at keeping up. The problem on my end is trying to give feedback to over 20 assignments at a time. It takes hours.
Chip: It should get better from here on.
Denise: :)
Nancy Vondrak: i can imagine
Karie: you could always adjust and give us less to do... :)
Keith: I can also imagine.
Andy: I know how you feel dealing with my students
Chip: I've never brought myself to do that, Karie.
Karie: Just kidding. Me either.
Jenn V.: Nice try, karie
Chip: Any other course questions?
Andy: Oh, chip, i sent you an email about getting on palace, ignore it now.
Chip: Will do, Andy
Adina: discussion points are based from here and our forums, or mainly forums?
Chip: Forums only
Adina: thanks
Chip: These classes are their own reward!
Adina: true
Keith: :)
Chip: How about content questions? Analysis phase questions?
Andy: i'm good
Jenn L: I think I've got it
Shehu Umar: Things have really accumulated now.
Jamie: The objectives were very hard for me to write!
Karie: I agree--especially the criteria.
Chip: Hard in what way, Jamie?
Jamie: the wording was difficult for me to grasp
Jamie: I had a hard time getting started
Jenn V.: Is anyone else going back to various parts of their projects and tweaking things as we go along?
Jenn L: yes
Tanja: I am not sure how to do performance objective on a concept. For example students need to know concept of long-term memory. What would be performance objective?
Chip: I certainly hope so, Jenn V
Denise: Yes, I am. I have cut parts out.
Jamie: I have had a lot of feedback that I needed to go back and fix :)
Karie: I had a difficult time writing good criteria for things that just seem like the only criteria was "correctly"
Nancy Vondrak: yes
Jenn V.: I think I must have made at least fifteen changes
Jamie: me too Karie
Keith: I am tweaking things too.
Annette: I find myself wanting to add every little detail to my objectives.
Chip: Tanja, some good ways are to have them define the concept AND distinguish it from other similar things (e.g. WM)
Tanja: Thanks. I am constantly going over all 4 items.
Chip: "Correctly" is often a good one.
rsynk: i used accurately alot
Nancy Vondrak: so am I Tanja
Andy: Mine has a lot of "correctly"
Lauren Davidson: that's reassuring because i certainly used "correctly" a lot!
Jamie: I think I wrote successfully a lot!
Jamie: and some correctly
Keith: I can spell correctly in my sleep.
Nancy Vondrak: i hope so (lol!)
Karie: Even when I submitted, there were several objectives that ended with: (need help w/criteria here)!
Denise: How about "given a"?
Chip: I'll try to help Karie.
Shehu Umar: Would 'fast' have a place where speed is important?
Nancy Vondrak: I found myself using "given a" a lot
Jenn L: I used that a lot too denise
Jenn V.: I know we talked about cutting and pasting, but I sorta felt like I was making a shortcut or missing something by doing that
Andy: Shehu, try using a time limit
Chip: Shehu, if possible, try to specific how fast is fast. Fast for running a mile is different from the 100 meter dash.
Karie: I started with "Given..." every single time I think!
Keith: Well, I have a question. I am thinking I should strike language about "podcast" from my goal, etc, because I am just having them create an MP3 file. Does this sound okay?
Shehu Umar: Okay
Chip: I always start with "Given..."
Jamie: I needed to cut and past since I used the same words over and over- that was hard to do- I felt like it didn't make sense some of the time
Keith: I am thinking with a 1 hour limit I will focus on the MP3 part.
Tanja: Jenn, I actually used IA and just modified it for PO.
Chip: So, the recording could be for any number of purposes.
Keith: Yes
Keith: It could.
Andy: Tanja, I did the same thing.
Chip: Then you could lose the podcast stuff and still have the same thing... so do it.
Jenn V.: Ok. Ifeel better.
Keith: Okay.
Chip: Yes, the IA should translate directly over into the objs (until you find the gaps and have to go back).
Karie: What do you mean by that, Chip?
Chip: do we see how the AP constitutes a complete set of things?
Keith: Yes
Nancy Vondrak: yes I do
Shehu Umar: I am sure after completing this one can critique any report, document, anything...
Jenn L: the order makes a lot of sense now
Annette: Tanya I did that to and started to see that I was leaving steps out of the IA.
Chip: Karie. You should be able to take the IA and make objs out of each part directly. Sometimes, though, some of you have found problems while writing the objs and have gone back to the IA.
Keith: As I was doing the objectives, I found a couple of gaps and fixed things as I found them.
Karie: Thanks--I see what you mean now.
Karie: I did the same thing.
Chip: I have considered in this class having people do the AP and then trade with others to do the next phase.
Keith: That would be interesting.
Andy: yes it would
Jenn V.: Interesting.
Shehu Umar: I would love that
Denise: I do not think that I would like that after all the time I put into it. I feel so attached to my project.
Tanja: That sounds very interesting but may be problematic if they do not know the subject matter.
Nancy Vondrak: i'm not sure I follow how that would be done, Chip
Annette: Let not do it. Don't confuse me
Jamie: it wold have its good and bad points
Jamie: Good to see if someone can follow your project
Keith: Would grading change?
Chip: It's actually done in some contracting situations. The armed forces now sometimes contract out the analysis to one group and then put in a new RFP for the design and development.
Jamie: Bad if they can't and don't understand the material
Karie: I kind of feel like Denise, and I worry that I would steer someone the wrong way.
Chip: Most people are pretty horrified by the idea.
Chip: Grading could be a problem, Keith.
Nancy Vondrak: i too feel attached to my project
Tanja: I actually like the idea.
Chip: Anyway, I won't do that here.
Keith: :)
Chip: This time, at least.
Andy: k
Nancy Vondrak: thanks
Jenn V.: Thnk you!
Jenn L: ;)
Annette: That's me Chip - horrified with the thought.
Keith: Horrified?
Karie: I imagine the armed forces is contracting out to an EXPERT in the analysis phase & for the design & dev phase, which I'm not!
Chip: Well, that's true, Karie.
Chip: OK, here's the deal with this evening:
Chip: I have been working on a way to have people critique one another's projects. Turns out it's harder to do online than you might think.
Keith: I think points would help
Shehu Umar: I would love that
Chip: In particular I need a way to open up your latest versions for pople in the class (or at least in groups) to see.
Karie: It takes a long time to read through other people's work. And then I feel very tentative offering my opinion, in case I'm wrong.
Andy: The wiki is a good place to do that.
Tanja: Why? We are doing it in Computer applications.
Tanja: We can put stuff on wiki.
Chip: Karie.... yes that's the other issue. My model is the studio critiique that often takes place in art and design classes,
Jamie: I agree Kari- I might not knwo what I am talking about!
Chip: but with them it is easier to take in the product all at once.
Karie: can't we email attachments to each other and give/receive feedback?
Chip: Yes, but the Moodle wiki is not very reliable, and not everyone is using the wikispaces one.
Shehu Umar: I couldnt post on it. I feel bad
Jenn L: So what are we going to do?
Andy: I can give a list of users for the wiki and try to get everyone on board
Chip: Here's one possibilitiy: We could start this evening in small groups and move it to Moodle, where you would attach things to discussion postings.
Chip: We could try the Wiki for the second one later in the semester.
Andy: Shehu, have you requested to join the page?
Karie: sounds technical--hope I can figure out how to do it!
Shehu Umar: I saw me in there but I read the instructions but got nowhere.
Chip: Let's try this for now. We'll divide into groups and discuss what you think are the major problems you are having at this point.
Tanja: Yes, wiki is not totally straightforward. Probably could use some organization?
Andy: Shehu, i don't have you as a member. click join this page and i can get you set
Shehu Umar: Okay Andy thanks
Chip: Those who are doing software training should move to the upper left of the room.
Chip: Others move away from there.
Andy: I can also create different pages for each part of the project
Tanja: Maybe some sub-folders? Is that possible? I did not look...
Andy: only pages
Tanja: That sounds great.
Chip: OK, so at least three of you are doing Excel... who is that?
Kris Robenolt: I can't seem to get myself to move anywhere
Jamie: me
Nancy Vondrak: i am
Lauren Davidson: I'm Excel
Chip: Click where you want to be, Kris.
Kris Robenolt: as simple as that...boy do I feel stupid
Chip: OK, Jamie, Nancy and Lauren... YOu are a group. Pick a room and go there.
Shehu Umar: So do I Kris
Nancy Vondrak: fountains
Lauren Davidson: fountins
Jamie: Fountains?
Lauren Davidson: ha!
Jamie: nice!
Lauren Davidson: we think alike!
Nancy Vondrak: c u there
Chip: Some of you are doing multimedia things... sound, pix, etc. Who is that?
Kris: me
Andy: me
Keith: me
Heidi: me
Annette: nw
Annette: sorry me
Chip: OK, you five are a group... pick a room and go!
Andy: bridge
Shehu Umar: I hope I am not going to be alone.
Keith: the cabin
Andy: cabin is ok
Keith: okay
Chip: No one is alone here!
Annette: how do i get there
Chip: Options menu... Goto room
Chip: OK, Matt, Tanja, and Denise, what are your projects
Denise: Yahoo Mail
Matt Dockery: Statistics program
*** You now have wizard privileges.
Tanja: I teach teachers how to enforce encoding in their students
Chip: That's not software, Tanja, so for now, we'll leave Matt and Denise in a group.
Chip: Matt and Denise, find place and go.
Matt Dockery: Denise, Hoover?
Tanja: I see. I meant it will be on-line class : -)
Denise: Sounds good
Chip: OK, the rest of you... a three word description of your projects?
Shehu Umar: Freehand sketching
Kris Robenolt: multiplication
rsynk: website evaluation
Jennifer J.: write bibliography
Jenn L: study skills
Karie: Making concept maps
Tanja: Teach teachers...
Jenn V.: cooking for special needs
Adina: write a complete sentence
Chip: Hmm, concept maps, study skllls, and bibliog... you're a group. Fina room and go
Jenn L: zoo?
Karie: bridge?
Karie: zoo's good
Jennifer J.: k
Chip: I think we'll just make two miscellaneous groups now:
Chip: Tanja, Adina, rsynk... you're a group.
Tanja: Breakout?
Chip: And the rest of you are the last group.
Adina: k
rsynk: k
Shehu Umar: Where to Kris?
Kris Robenolt: how's house?
Jenn V.: k
Shehu Umar: ok
*** You are going to stay in these groups for a while (at least on and off), so the first thing you want to do is understand the basic project topics and needs for each one.
*** So introduce yourselves (again) and your projects. Explain what you are doing and what you think the key issues are.
*** Also where any problems are.
*** Don't know how long this will take. When you are ready, come on back to the lobby.
Keith: Hi!
Chip: Hi
Heidi: @64,64 !It's Heidi
Heidi: sorry guys
Chip: So, did you have things to say?
Heidi: I lost connection
Keith: Yes
Keith: I changed my IA from an outline to a flowchart, others changed FROM a flowchart to an outline.
Andy: we were able to give suggestions and answer questions
Kris: chip i just get worried because i have drastically changed everything of mine after your feedback
Annette: I like your shades Andy.
Chip: Whatever communicates is what is the best IA format.
Chip: Kris, and you'll hear from me again on the AP in a couple of weeks.
Keith: Chip, for the Wiki, I ended up cutting and pasting my flowchart one page at a time into Word and this seems to work okay.
Andy: I wear my sunglasses at night. (a song from the '80s)
Keith: Does this sound okay as far as format?
Kris: ok
Jenn V.: I remember that song well,Andy
Chip: I guess so, Keith. We'll have to take a look.
Keith: Okay
Kris Robenolt: I know the song well Andy
Kris: Hillary is late by the way!
Keith: The sun was bothering Andy's eyes.
Keith: It was bright in the woods by the cabin.
Keith: I hear Hillary is usually late.
Andy: yup, it's amazing how clear things are with this now computer
Jenn V.: what station is covering Hillary
Kris: all of them
Kris: won't be on fox though, american idol
Keith: Maybe the campaining will go to an American Idol format.
Keith: Not too far from that at times, now.
Andy: there goes the electoral college
Chip: That could be fun
Keith: "Yes it could"
Keith: Chip, if I keep the flowchart format - in the end, are we to have the POs right along side the IA steps?
Keith: I would not have room with my current format.
Keith: I submitted the IA steps in an outline format with the POs for the PO assignment submission.
Andy: that is why i went with the outline format
Jenn V.: Outline worked best for me
Chip: You need objs for each piece of the IA. Try to have a way of numbering the boxes so that you can coordinate them
Chip: Don't put the ojbs on the flowchart, though.
Keith: Just some kind of number coded format?
Chip: Yes
Keith: Okay.
Chip: We'll give the other groups a couple more minutes.
Andy: kpdoran is now ready to use the wiki
Denise: Andy, I somehow deleted your PP on the wiki.. sorry!
Keith: I have some "explaination" balloons that I put in my flowchart that I did not include in my PO assignment.
Kris: ok thanks
Annette: Andy I have used wiki. Is there someplace I can go to get instructions?
Keith: I added in the balloons to clarify things, but they are not "steps" per se in the instructional process.
Andy: use the PPT I place at the top. It is what I used at the tech conference
Denise: Andy,.. that is what I accidentally deleted.. see my comment above!
Karie: @64,64 !It's Karie
Annette: Thanks, I will look at it
Keith: Are you feeling tired Chip?
Jenn V.: My neighbor texted me and said Hillary is in the buiding.
Keith: Huh
Jennifer J.: where-what bldg?
Kris: Chaney High!
Andy: Denise, i just fixed it.
Denise: Thanks! I guess I should actually read it now!
Keith: Did you know that the number of text messeges each day, exceeds the number of people on the planet?
Chip: Keith, that sounds like a good idea for adding info about concepts required, etc.
Jenn L: karie, that's where online classes don't work for me...I need to intract and actually see what others are doing...hands on.
Keith: I sbowed "Did you know" to my students today.
Andy: On the wiki if you think you made a mistake don't save, just close out and try again.
Tanja: We may get that online once everyone has a camera.
*** Time to come back to the lobby.
Jennifer J.: what is "did you know"
rsynk: i showed it last year and we had a great discussion
Jenn L: what building is hillary in?
Keith: IF you go to YouTube or TeacherTube and do a search for "Did you know" you can watch it.
rsynk: it seems to be perpetually making the rounds
Jennifer J.: thanks.
Chip: OK, the next step with these groups...
Chip: There will be places in Moodle where you can discuss your projects together, share the pieces and critique.
Chip: That will be especially valuable when we get to the Design Document in a couple of weeks.
Chip: In many ways the most time-intensive part of the project is coming ot an end. You'll have a little more time for the coming parts.
Keith: whew
Chip: Questios?
Andy: is that spanish?
Jamie: That was very helpful!
Keith: Si
Nancy Vondrak: i was going to ask the same thing!
Chip: yeah yeah.... questions....
Jenn L: I'm good
Keith: March 11th is the due date for resubmitting everything to this point.
Jenn V.: up to march 11, we can continue to get feedback from you on completed or corrected items?
Andy: good hear
Lauren Davidson: we can use the group discussions for the upcoming weeks?
Karie: so this week we focus on revising previous drafts? No new assignments?
Andy: i mean here
Keith: So Chip, again, if we have a question here or there we can email you, just not entire assignments.
Chip: Oh, one thing.... I have fixed things so that you can put new versions of the assignments on Moodle. With the IA, you are allowed to upload multiple files, so you may end up with duplicates.
Shehu Umar: Great
Andy: k
Nancy Vondrak: are you saying we can submit corrected work for further critiqueing by you?
Chip: I really have trouble giving feedback on multiple drafts. The March 11 one is the next chance for the AO
Chip: That's AP
Tanja: How will you know which one is valide?
Karie: You will post specific directions on how to upload everything we've done previously on Moodle?
Adina: what if we marked our changes in bold? so they stand out?
Chip: What I will probably do is have you submit the latest versions on Moodle for grading by March 11.
Chip: Yes, Karie.
Nancy Vondrak: so we only submit once more by 3/11 and that is for grading
Annette: So if I accidently submitted my IA, for a grade, it won't count against me?
Chip: Well, let me think about the details. Perhaps I'll announce one round of critiques of the changes, if as Adina says, they are marked in bold.
Andy: I have done what Annette has done also
Annette: I sure would love to make some changes to it.
Jamie: you are going to give us more instructions on that later right? Like if you want all the files together or if we are submiting all 4 seperatly right
Jenn V.: That would be great, Chip
Keith: I like the BOLD feedback idea.
Karie: It's too late for me to mark anything in bold--I changed as I went along! Oh well.
Andy: me too
Denise: I already changed mine too
Chip: OK, I'll put instrctions on Moodle this week for getting another review and for getting the grades later.
Tanja: I had to re-do my IA completely : -)
Shehu Umar: fine
Andy: k
Adina: thanks
Nancy Vondrak: ok
Jenn L: ok
Annette: thanks
Keith: okay
Jenn V.: k
Karie: very generous!
Shehu Umar: Thanks
Heidi: thanks
Jamie: thank you
Kris: thanks
Chip: And that's about it for this evening.
Tanja: Thanks.
Jennifer J.: awesome
Chip: Anything else?
Keith: super!!
Matt Dockery: ok
Jenn V.: good night!
rsynk: gn
Annette: Have a great week. Snow is due in the morning
Nancy Vondrak: have a good week everyone
Andy: thanks, the dogs are barking for me
Keith: Nothing for now.
Jamie: good night! thanks for all the help tonight!
Kris Robenolt: gn
Denise: Good night!
Shehu Umar: See you all on Moodle
Chip: Bye all
Keith: Good night!
Lauren Davidson: good night!
