Instructional Design

Overall Strategies and Media:

The delivery system used will be self-guided instructional materials in either web-based format or written format.

The content sequence will be as follows:

  • Prerequisite assessment followed by Pretest

  • Self-guided instructional modules providing step-by-step instruction

  • Hands-on practice of subordinate objectives by learners

  • Posttest performance demonstration by learners

Three learners will be chosen for this instruction.  The learners will be teachers that have no experience or knowledge of how to use the SMART Board and Notebook Software.  The instruction will take approximately an hour to complete.

The media chosen for this instruction will include:

  • A multimedia presentation (instructor prepared web site)  or printed instructional guide to introduce the SMART Board technology and its uses

  • Handouts prepared by the instructor, detailing steps necessary to complete subordinate objectives

  • A computer, projector and SMART Board with Notebook Software for hands-on demonstration and practice

Group and Sequence of Objectives:

The objectives for this instructional unit are divided into six  clusters.  Each cluster is then divided into how it addresses Gagné's Events of Instruction and the ARCS model.

Gain Attention

(ATTENTION)

Show examples of lessons and ideas on how teacher's use the Smart Board in their classrooms.  Provide a handout with links to resources and ideas. Demonstrate how important it is to orient a mobile Smart Board by writing on a board that has not been properly oriented, noting how difficult it is to write and erase on a Board that has not been oriented. Demonstrate how easy it is to write on the board and how you can actually enter in typed text on the Board without using your computer's keyboard. Demonstrate how you can get an image or sections of text from an Internet Web page and how you can write on the web page and be able to save and print your annotations, as well as the web page itself. Demonstrate how you can show a PowerPoint slide presentation, make notes and comments on the PowerPoint slides and be able to save the notes and comments in Notebook software.
Inform Learner of Objective

(RELEVENCE)

Explain how each piece of equipment (Smart Board, projector, board pens and eraser) should be set up in order to operate the Smart Board successfully. Explain that Smart Board orientation is necessary every time you move or jostle the board and that it is a good idea to lock the board's wheels once you have it in place. Explain how you can open up the Notebook software and then use various methods to write on the board (finger tip, Board pens, Smart Keyboard) and to erase annotations made on the board. Explain how you can write notes or comments on the board on top of an application such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or other software application and then be able to save and print your notes and comments for review and use at a future time. Explain how you can write notes on a PowerPoint slide and then be able to save the slide with your notes and comments in Notebook software.
Stimulate recall of Prerequisites Review how to setup the Smart Board and projector and how to turn on the equipment and boot up the computer. Review how to find and launch the Smart Board tools from the computer's desktop. Review  how to find and launch the SMART Keyboard from the Smart Board tray. Review how to find and launch a computer software application from the computer. No review of prerequisite skills are needed.
Present Stimulus Material Provide step-by-step directions on setup of Smart Board and it's components. Provide directions for orienting Smart Board. Provide step-by-step directions for writing on the Board with your finger tip, with a Board pen or with the SMART keyboard.

Provide directions on how to erase written annotations from the board.

Explain the difference between a non-board aware software program and a board aware software program.

Provide step-by-step directions on capturing written annotations using three different methods.

Provide step-by-step directions on how to write on a PowerPoint slide and how to save annotations made into Notebook software.
Provide Learner Guidance

(CONFIDENCE)

Provide a checklist with equipment needed to operate the Smart Board. Provide a graphic illustrating how to orient a Smart Board. Provide a graphic illustrating the different methods for writing and erasing on a Smart Board. Provide a graphic illustrating three ways to capture annotations, and to capture a  full screen or a selected area of the screen. Provide a graphic illustrating how to make annotations on a PowerPoint slide and how to save the annotation and slide in Notebook software.
Elicit Performance Allow learners to practice setting up the Smart Board equipment . Allow learners to practice orienting the Smart Board. Allow learners to write on the Board using their finger tips, using the Board pens and using the SMART keyboard.

Allow users to erase their writings with either their fingers or the Board's eraser.

Allow learners to write notes and comments on a non-board aware program such as Word or Excel.

Allow users to capture their writings using the three capture buttons.

Allow users to open up a web page from the Internet, write notes or comments on the web page, capture what's on the Board's screen and view it in Notebook software.

Allow users to open up the Internet and capture a picture or image from the Internet and then view the image in Notebook software.

Allow learners to open up a PowerPoint slide, make notes or comments on the slide and then save their notes and slide in Notebook software.
Provide Feedback

(SATISFACTION)

Learners will recognize if any Smart Board equipment or components is missing and if equipment and Smart Board is set up properly. Learners will recognize when they will need to orient the Smart Board. Learners will recognize which writing methods (finger tip, Board pens or SMART Keyboard) work best for them. Learners will recognize how to capture, save and print their annotations using various types of software applications. Learners will recognize how easy it is to make notes on a PowerPoint slide and how they can save their notes and slide for future use.
Assess Performance Learners will demonstrate their progress by performing tasks listed on a performance checklist. Learners will demonstrate their progress by performing tasks listed on a performance checklist. Learners will demonstrate their progress by performing tasks listed on a performance checklist. Enhance Retention and Transfer Learners will  practice setting  up a Smart Board. Learners will  practice orienting a Smart Board.. Learners will practice writing notes and comments on an application projected on the Smart Board. Learners will practice capturing and saving annotation and notes written on the Smart Board. Learners will practice making notes and comments on a PowerPoint slide and will save the notes, comments and slide to Notebook software.
