SMART BOARD AND NOTEBOOK BASICS

LEARN

Using a Smart Board is as simple as touching, writing and saving.  When you've completed this module, you'll have a basic understanding of all three.

Before You Start:
This module assumes that your computer is running, that the Smart Board is connected and that you have already oriented the Smart board (modules 1 and 2).  The Smart Board becomes touch sensitive as soon as you start your computer.  Any time you touch the Smart Board, your finger acts as a left-click.  Press on the Smart Board surface to open applications, select objects and perform any operation that requires a left click.

  • For tasks that require a double-click, press the Smart board twice in rapid succession.

  • For tasks that require a right-click, press the Right Mouse button on the pen tray.  Your next press
will be recognized as a right-click.

  • You can also press and hold the area of the screen you would like the Smart board to recognize
     as a right-click.

1 How to Open and Launch Smart Notebook Software
  • The Smart Board tools should automatically startup with your computer once the software is loaded.  Check the lower right-hand corner of the screen for the Smart Board Tools Icon.

  • If the icon is not present in the system tray, double click the Smart Board Tools Desktop Icon.

  • Using your finger as a mouse, press the Smart Board Icon twice in rapid succession.
  • Press the  Notebook option twice in rapid succession to open up Notebook.

  • A blank Smart Notebook page will open

Notes:

  • Notebook software lets you save, organize and distribute notes written on a Smart board.
  • Like a conventional paper notebook, Smart Notebook software stores information on a series of pages.
  • Notebook software can also easily move, copy and insert information on the active page or onto a new and previously existing pages.

Tips:
  • When all the tools are in the Pen tray, any touch on the board is the same as a left-mouse click

2 How to Write and Erase on the Board Using the Smart Tools
  • Pick up a pen from the Smart pen Tray and  with your try pen write your first name in the large white area. Removing a pen from the tray tells the computer that you want to write.
  • Return the pen to the pen tray -- the cursor will reappear when you return the pen to the tray you'll regain touch control.

Notes:

  • When writing, press firmly and consistently on the Smart Board and avoid resting your hand on the surface.

  • Pick up the eraser from the pen tray.
  • Move the eraser in a smooth motion over your annotations to erase them.

Notes:

  • The Smart board recognizes the last tool removed from the pen tray as the tool you want to use.  For example, if you already have a pen in your hand when you pick up the eraser, the Smart board will assume you want to erase.

3 How to Write and Erase on the Board Using Your Fingers
  • Pick up a pen from the Smart pen Tray and  with your finger tip write your first name in the large white area. Removing a pen from the tray tells the computer that you want to write.
  • Return the pen to the pen tray -- the cursor will reappear when you return the pen to the tray you'll regain touch control,

Notes:

  • Remember that a pen must be removed from the pen tray -- even though you are using your finger tip to write.
  • If you return the pen to the pen tray without capturing the annotation, your annotation will disappear the next time you touch the screen.

Notes:

  • When a tool is removed from the pen tray, the Smart board software remembers that last tool removed and either produces ink or erases ink (depending on whether your removed a pen or an eraser)

  • Pick up the eraser from the pen tray.
  • Move your finger tips over the board to erase the written annotation.

Notes:

  • The Smart board recognizes the last tool removed from the pen tray as the tool you want to use.  For example, if you already have a pen in your hand when you pick up the eraser, the Smart board will assume you want to erase.
