Basic College Math Example

You teach some basic math courses at a local college (college algebra and other similar things). Most of your students major in other programs but are in your courses because the classes are requirements for their majors. Many or most of them also complain bitterly about your classes. They really don't want to be there, and they don't see why they should be required to take these courses when they would rather be studying "relevant" things in their fields. You are used to these complaints, so they don't bother you much. You just keep on teaching. You are also used to the low student ratings most semesters; you've got tenure anyway. What does bother you is the fact that many of the students who complain the most do the worst in the classes. They seem bright enough, but they just don't get the math. You wonder if you are teaching it all wrong.
