Auto Mechanics Example

You teach basic auto mechanics. You have begun to notice an interesting phenomenon. A lot of your students coming into the beginning class already know something about repairing cars. However, they are haphazard about it. You know that following systematic procedures will help their performance in their jobs, so you teach them not only diagnostic and repair techniques but also systematic procedures for tool-handling and so on. They seem to learn it successfully, since they can perform them when tested or observed. However, when they work on cars in other settings, they usually revert to their old ways of doing things.
