Why Instructional Analysis?

Thus, the key purposes of Instructional Analysis are

  1. to understand what we are trying to teach,
  2. to ensure that nothing is left out of the teaching that could be critical for performing some task (including doing well on a test or other assessment),
  3. to ensure that we don't teach people things they already know, thus wasting their time and our effort, and
  4. to ensure that we don't teach people things they don't need to know.

All of these reasons are important. Although we may not be perfect at it, it is clear that a good instructional analysis can go a long way toward focusing what we teach.
