Zipping (Compressing) Files

There are several reasons to zip or compress your work before you send it to me:

bulletIt makes the files much smaller, so the transfer takes less time and bandwidth.
bulletIt is not possible to send a folder, so you would have to attach each file separately to an email message. When you do this you might forget some or not be able to conserve the directory structure of the original site, which would mean that the pages would not work properly.
bulletSome email programs insert attached HTML files directly into the message itself, making it difficult to save and view them with a browser.

The standard compression scheme on Windows computers is Zip, and there are several programs that will zip and unzip files. One of the most popular is WinZip, which is available in a free version. If you need it for this course, download it, use it, and learn it. Consult with me if you have specific problems.
