Starting a Web

When you use FrontPage, you should think in terms of building a site, not just making individual pages. Therefore, the first thing you will do when you start the program is create your first Web. This will create a folder for the Web and put some directories and files that FrontPage needs into their proper places. Later, when you use themes and other features, FrontPage will put the files it requires into the right places as well.

To start a new Web, follow these steps:

bullet  Use the File menu, New... choice.
bullet  Look at the set of choices that will appear in a window at the right of the screen (FP2003).
Most of the time, you will want to create a "one-page" Web. If that link is not there, then click on the More Web Templates link. This will give you a site with your home page already there (it will be called index.htm or index.html). Don't worry; you can add other pages.
bullet  In the dialog box that appears, leave the One Page Web icon highlighted, and enter the location of your new site in the small box at the right.
It is important to specify where on the hard drive the Web will be created, as well as the name of the folder. A common place for FrontPage users to put their new Webs is in My Documents... My Webs... webname. Give it a name that is meaningful to you.
bullet  Click OK.

That should do it. Some of the other Web types require more decisions, but let's worry about them later.

FrontPage will create the basics for you in a single folder. From now on you should save everything for the site into this folder, using FrontPage. When you come back to FrontPage to work on your site, just open the site from the File menu.
