The Palace is a two-dimensional graphical chat room used for a few classes at Kent State. The College of Education runs a Palace server, and the client programs for Mac or Windows are free. It requires relatively little bandwidth. It is relatively easy to customize it.

It can be useful for small group collaboration for several reasons:

  • It is easy to link back and forth between The Palace and specific Web pages, making it possible to give instructions to groups over the Web.
  • Groups can move to different rooms within a Palace where their conversations will not interfere with one another.
  • Communications are relatively fast.
  • The graphical nature of the rooms can give a feeling of presence that is often lacking in pure textual chats.
  • The logs of the conversations can be recorded for assessment, review, or posting.
